Hollywood star Sandra Bullock will swap a space helmet for stilettos when she hits the red carpet as the major draw for the second day of the London Film Festival.

Bullock, who will be joined by director Alfonso Cuaron and producer David Heyman, will tonight attend a gala screening of sci-fi thriller Gravity at Leicester Square.

The film, also starring George Clooney, follows the challenges of two astronauts trapped in space when debris crashes into their shuttle.

While the drama will be the festival's main event, it won't be the only premiere the red carpet will be rolled out for.

Emily Mortimer, Dolly Wells and director Azazel Jacobs will attend the screening of the new Sky Living TV series Doll and Em.

The sitcom, due to air in February, follows a Hollywood star and her personal assistant.

The night will be rounded off with an official screening of the futuristic animated film The Congress.

It revolves around an ageing actress who sells her likeness to a powerful film studio and then has to deal with the consequences.

Oscar winning-actor Tom Hanks braved a drizzly and blustery Leicester Square last night to open the festival with the premiere of his new film Captain Phillips.

But the 57-year-old had nothing but praise for the capital, even when asked to comment on its weather.

"I'll take that, come on! We're in London - fabulous," he said.

Hanks plays the lead role of Captain Phillips in the true-life thriller about the Maersk Alabama hijacking by Somalian pirates in 2009.

He'll also close the festival playing Walt Disney in Saving Mr Banks and is to attend a celebration of his career in cinema by Bafta while he is in town.

The festival runs until Sunday, October 20.
