Tributes have been paid to a British quad biker who died during a competition in Europe.

The 19-year-old rider, named by friends as Connor Smith, died during a heat of the European Quad of Nations championships in Italy at the weekend.

A statement on the Facebook page of Quad Scotland said: " Deeply saddened and shocked to learn today of the tragic loss of Connor Smith, our 2013 Champion; a great friend, committed competitor and huge inspiration to quad riders young and old, in Scotland and beyond.

"He achieved so much in his short life, and had so much still to give. Our thoughts and sympathies go to Bill, Jackie, family and friends."

Reports said Mr Smith died after he fell from his quad, only to be struck by competitors.

Friends last night paid tribute to the sportsman.

Writing on the Quad Scotland page, Warren David Allan said: "We're all devastated to hear about Connor. Does not seem real.

"Thoughts with Connor's family and all the Quad family. He was loved and respected by everyone who knew him. Such a huge loss."

Fellow racer Leon Beda described Mr Smith as "a champion", adding: "An amazing person. Heart of gold. I will miss him dearly."

John Hendry wrote: "Quad racing has lost a great competitor and Scotland has lost a great young champion."
