Nick Compton on Thursday morning made his debut in the first Test against India at the Sardar Patel Stadium.

England, as expected, named Compton to open the batting alongside new captain Alastair Cook.

India were as published, with two specialist spinners in Ravichandran Ashwin and Pragyan Ojha.
