Jamieson seeks further glory in 200m

Michael Jamieson will be looking to go one better than his Olympic performance in Istanbul
14 December 2012

Michael Jamieson was set to take his place in the heats of the 200 metres breaststroke at the World Short-Course Championships in Istanbul on Friday morning as he looked to add to the silver medal he won in the event at the Olympics in the summer.

The event at the Sinan Erdem Dome is loaded with quality with the 24-year-old due to face Daniel Gyurta, the Hungarian who had to break the world record to fend him off in London, as well as Akihiro Yamaguchi, the Japanese swimmer who then set a new world mark in September.

Jamieson was intensely frustrated after finishing 12th in the 100m in Turkey, complaining it had been "the same old story" as he looked to compete against the powerful "bigger guys" in order to improve in the longer race.

The Glaswegian will have been raring to go as he looks to add to Britain's tally of two medals so far with Hannah Miley and Jemma Lowe having taken gold and bronze respectively on the first night of the five-day competition.

Miley was fourth on Thursday night in the 800m freestyle, edged out of a podium finish by Chloe Sutton of the United States, Jamieson's fellow Scot clocking eight minutes 16.09 seconds.

City of Sheffield's Eleanor Faulkner - with whom Miley sometimes trains - was eighth in 8mins 22.96secs.

Georgia Davies was fifth in the 100m backstroke in a new Welsh record.

The Swansea ITC swimmer was in contention to the end but was edged out of the medals by 0.14secs in 57.32.

Ieuan Lloyd set his third Welsh record in two days as he led off the 4x200m freestyle squad in 1:45.24, the quartet seventh as Ryan Lochte picked up his third gold medal - and fourth overall - with the United States.

Sophie Allen was sixth into Friday's 100m individual medley final.
