Wayne Rooney has thanked the Manchester United supporters for their "unbelievable reaction" to his return to the starting line-up against Chelsea on Monday.

The England striker received an enthusiastic reception from the Old Trafford faithful in the goalless Barclays Premier League clash.

Rooney, who was a substitute in the season opener at Swansea, posted some pictures from the match on his Facebook page and also wrote: "Here's some pictures from Monday night's game. It was an unbelievable reaction from the fans, so thank you. I really appreciate your support. It means a lot."

The 27-year-old has been strongly linked with a move to Chelsea this summer, but it is understood he will not be handing in a transfer request ahead of the window closing on Monday.

However, the issues that prompted the player's desire to leave United remain unresolved.

With United implacably opposed to selling Rooney, though, that potential transfer appears to have reached an impasse.
