Trescothick out for six weeks

Somerset captain Marcus Trescothick is set to be sidelined for at least six weeks with an ankle injury, the county's director of cricket Brian Rose has confirmed.

Trescothick hurt his right ankle while fielding during the second day of Somerset's LV= County Championship match with Nottinghamshire on Friday and, after undergoing scans, it has been decided that he will require surgery.

The 36-year-old former England opener missed the last three Championship games of last season with an injury to the same ankle.

Rose told BBC Somerset: "We had the scans back this morning and, with a consultant appointment at two o'clock, it was quickly ascertained that he needed an operation as soon we can do it, and that it's very very likely that he could be out for about a minimum of six to seven weeks

"It's the same area (as last season), he's got a recurring problem and that's why we've really got to deal with it now, because otherwise it would be career-threatening if we don't do it.

"Yes, he's going to miss six or seven weeks but hopefully he will be perfect for the rest of the season.

"I think the first target could be 13 June, the start of the T20 competition, that would be ideal he could. If not, we'll have to take judgements as we go along in terms of how his injury is healing."
