Chart-topper Anne-Marie says she thought she would end up working in musicals after landing a role in Les Misérables in the West End aged six.

The singer, 25, who is originally from Essex, is No 1 with Clean Bandit and Sean Paul with their collaboration Rockabye.

She said: “I went to a performing arts school every Saturday. I went to an audition and didn’t think I could sing but somehow got a part in Les Mis.

I thought, ‘Uh oh, I really better concentrate on my singing!’ I got another role in Whistle Down The Wind and thought I would be in musicals for the rest of my life. But then my voice changed and went lower.

“I went off on my own direction and started writing my own songs. But being in musicals really taught me how to tell a story through singing.”

Anne-Marie, who is signed to Elton John’s Rocket Music, has a sold-out show at Koko on Monday.

Her debut album is due out in spring.
