The Islamic State terror group has claimed responsibility for the attack which is the deadliest Spain has seen since 2004 when more than 190 people died in the Madrid train bombs.

Hours later five terrorists wearing suspected suicide belts who were planning a second atrocity in Spain were shot dead by police.

The men rammed civilians with a car in the Spanish seaside town of Cambrills before being gunned down. Seven people were injured.

Mariano Rajoy, the Spanish prime minister, has declared three days of national mourning.
