Doctors have ordered Brian Conley to rest after he left I'm A Celebrity... Get Me Out Of Here! "exhausted" and having lost a lot of weight.

The 51-year-old star was removed from the ITV1 show and taken to hospital in Queensland, Australia, after falling ill and his wife Anne-Marie - who arrived at his bedside yesterday with daughters Amy, 15, and Lucy, 10 - is said to be shocked at the funnyman's condition after 10 days in the jungle.

A source said: "She couldn't believe how much he'd changed after 10 days in the jungle. He looks really unwell and vulnerable.

"He's lost a lot of weight and is exhausted. Doctors have prescribed lots of rest until he recovers. Anne-Marie was hugely supportive of Brian's decision to go on the show, but now you can't blame her wishing he hadn't.

"She wants to know how this happened and why bosses did not intervene earlier."

Brian - who has previously spoken of his battle with depression and alcoholism - had been seen breaking down in tears following a row with David Haye over a burning log and chastising Rosemary Shrager for comments she had made several days before.

Though celebrities have to undertake a series of tests before being approved for the show, insiders now fear the comic "slipped through the net".

The source added to The Sun: "We pride ourselves on ensuring celebrities are equipped for the challenge, but it seems one slipped through the net."

However, ITV insist they always put the health of their contestants first.

A spokesperson said: "The safety and welfare of our contestants is of paramount importance.

"All contestants are assessed by independent medical experts.

"We also have contact where necessary with the celebrities' GPs.

"Medical personnel are also available 24 hours a day to provide support if it is needed."

Brian is believed to have now been released from hospital.

TV bosses have not disclosed the star's condition and said they will not show any footage of what happened to make him leave.
