Chris Evans and Jeremy Renner have come under fire for branding Scarlett Johansson's Avengers character Black Widow a “slut” and a “whore”.

The pair made the derogatory remarks during an interview with Digital spy to promote their new film Avengers: Age of Ultron.

When asked what they thought about the idea of “shipping” Black Widow with their characters, now she is with Hulk (Mark Ruffalo), Renner replied: “She’s a slut.”

Evans – who plays Captain America in the second Marvel instalment – burst out laughing before adding: “I was going to say something along that line. She’s a complete whore.”

To make matters worse Renner later added, “She has a prosthetic leg anyway” to which Evans replied, “leading everybody on”.

Fans were quick to announce their shock with one user tweeting that they were "appalled" by the behaviour. "I'm actually really f****** appalled and disappointed with Jeremy Renner and Chris Evans in that interview with the ableism and slut-shaming," they tweeted.

Others branded the actors sexist with one commenting: "2 men calling a woman a slut and whore is sexist. Jeremy Renner and Chris Evans made a sexist joke. Intent does not erase impact!"

The interview follows that of their co-star Robert Downey Jr. who walked out of an interview with Channel 4 news presenter Krishnan Guru-Murthy after he broached the subject of the Iron Man actor’s past.

When the news presenter questioned whether Downey Jr. feels he is "free" from his past, the 50-year-old actor stood up and said: "I'm sorry, I really don't .. what are we doing?"

He then explained to Guru-Murthy that the interview was “getting a little Diane Sawyer” as he asked to have his microphone removed before walking out of the door.
