The singer shared a selfie of her and her on-off boyfriend of three years in which a huge pink ring was easily visible, while her mother Mary Hudson appeared - in the time honoured fashion of oversharing mums on Facebook - to confirm the news in a post on her social media accounts, to declare: "Look who got engaged on Valentine's Day!"

The couple started dating in January 2016 after sparks flew at a Golden Globes after party, and though the pair parted ways in 2017, it wasn't long before they reconciled, and they've been inseparable since giving things another go at the start of last year.

To celebrate their happy news, here's why the famous pair are one of the most endearing celebrity couples around.

They keep the Instagram PDA to a minimum

Unlike some famous couples we could name (cough, Nick Jonas and Priyanka Chopra, cough), Perry and Bloom appear to have decided not to painstakingly document every tiny moment in their relationship on social media. Indeed, engagement selfie aside, Perry has posted a handful of photos of her fiancé since they started dating – the most recent being a low-key birthday shout out to “the kindest and cutest man I’ve had the pleasure of spending time with,” which the singer shared back in January. Bloom’s Instagram, meanwhile, is a largely Perry-free zone (he seems to prefer posting endless throwbacks to his Lord of the Rings days). Other celebrities, please take note.

They're on good terms with Bloom's ex

Move over, Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin: though the couple famously hang out with Paltrow’s new husband Brad Falchuk and Martin’s rumoured girlfriend Dakota Johnson, the “consciously uncoupled” pair have competition in the amicability stakes from the Perry-Bloom-Miranda Kerr trio. The singer and the model dodged any awkwardness when they had a very public encounter at the Moschino catwalk show in 2017, when they were spotted happily chatting and even taking selfies. Reports have since suggested that Perry is on great terms with both Kerr and her son, Flynn – and even joined in with his seventh birthday celebrations last year.

They have a unique approach to his and hers dressing

Cast your minds back to the Met Gala in 2016, when the couple made things official in a somewhat unexpected way. Instead of walking the red carpet together, the pair decided to show their love by wearing matching Tamagotchis. Bloom wore his Nineties toy pinned on his lapel, while Perry hung hers from a chain placed around her waist in a nod to the ball’s ‘technology’ theme.

They go all out for fancy dress

For their Halloween celebrations ahead of the 2016 elections, Perry and Bloom opted for topical costumes, going all out to dress up as then-Presidential hopefuls Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump. Ahead of the couple's friend Kate Hudson's annual Halloween party, Perry obscured her face with strikingly realistic prosthetics in order to give her a more aged appearance, and finished the transformation with a cropped blonde wig and bright red pantsuit. Bloom had a slightly easier job, covering his face in orange fake tan and wearing a mask reminiscent of a Troll doll with a Make America Great Again cap.

They don't take themselves too seriously

Remember when those naked paddle boarding photos broke the Internet? The couple handled the online notoriety with remarkable ease, with Perry laughing at the memes and joking that her boyfriend was simply "showing off." She even went on to reveal that the whole situation was a social media baptism of fire for Bloom, who she'd only recently introduced to Twitter. "All of a sudden, he's like number on trending on Twitter. And he's like, 'I understand Twitter, it's okay,'" she later joked.
