Its hallowed chamber has hosted the likes of the Dalai Lama, Winston Churchill and Michael Jackson.

But today the Oxford Union welcomed a different type of world celebrity, as ‘Gangnam Style’ star Psy spoke to students, and even gave them a lesson in the hit dance moves that have made him a global phenomenon.

The South Korean pop star, whose video has been watched 665 million times - the second most viewed video in YouTube history - asked Union members in academic gowns to gather around him at the end of his talk to teach them his routine.

To loud cheers from the students watching, he asked the crowd to join in.

Speaking earlier he said the video had changed his life since his last visit to the UK.

“I was in London four months ago and it was a peaceful time,” he told the students, “now you’re all taking a picture of me.”

The cult star arrived 20 minutes late to rapturous applause in the chamber.

Union President John Lee jokingly described Gangnam Style as a “force for world peace” in his introduction to the talk.

Psy asked the audience if he should take his sunglasses off to which they all shouted “no”.

About the making of his video, he said: “We spent more than 30 nights to make the horse dance, it’s kind of funny but we were really serious about this dance. We tried literally ever creature.”

And he hinted that there was another Gangnam video coming: “The next one’s going to be successful because of me; I’m going to be more ridiculous,” he told the students, adding that it will be “half in Korean and half in English so maybe you will understand the lyrics more”.

Aaron Rai, a third year student at Hertford College who asked Psy to teach the crowd his dance, told the Standard: “He dances pretty damn well. I’d love to go to a club with him, VIP on a table that’s the next step.”

Psy is giving a performance at nightclub DSTRKT, Rupert Street, tonight.
