George Clooney has revealed how tough guy actor Russell Crowe tried to end a Hollywood feud between the two leading men – by sending him a book of poetry.

The row between the A-list Oscar-winners began after the Gladiator star attacked Clooney as a "sell-out".

"The truth is that (Russell Crowe) did send me a book of poems to apologise for insulting the s*** out of me, which he did,' Clooney says in an interview for next month’s Esquire magazine.

"And that's when he really went off on me. 'Who the f*** does this guy think he is? He's a Frank Sinatra wannabe.' He really went after me," added the Gravity star who is generally regarded as one of the entertainment world’s most likeable stars.

Knowing that he might run into Clooney during awards season some time later, Crowe reportedly attempted to apologise.

"I think he said 'I was misquoted' and I was like, 'Yeah, yeah. Whatever,'" Clooney told the magazine in a cover story.

The bad blood between the actors is said to have started started when Clooney compared his work in commercials to Crowe’s band 30 Odd Foot of Grunt and the New Zealand born actor took umbrage.

"I had a good laugh when Clooney tried to compare doing ads for suits, a car, and a drink to what I do as a musician," Crowe, 49, told Female First at the time.

"An endorsement is about money. My music is from the heart. I believe if you take on characters for a living you can’t make yourself into an icon in order to sell a pair of shoes," he added.

Clooney, 52, also took a potshot at another superstar actor Leonardo DiCaprio in the no holds barred interview, suggesting the Great Gatsby star might be hanging around with the wrong people.

The pair played basketball after striking up a friendship but Clooney suggested the game was soured when some of DiCaprio’s friends threatened to "kick ass".

Clooney claimed he ended up winning 11-0 and said: "The discrepancy between their game and how they talked about their game made me think of how important it is to have someone in your life to tell you what's what.

"I'm not sure if Leo has someone like that."

However Clooney, single again following his break up with statuesque former wrestler Stacy Keibler, had nothing but praise for his old Ocean’s Eleven friend Brad Pitt.

He complimented Pitt on carrying his film World War Z – which was plagued with problems during production – over the "finish line".

The pair met up in London and "drank a lot of vodka" after Pitt has admitted to Clooney the re-shoots were going to "kill" him.

He also explained why he and Pitt - and other actors such as Bill Murray – kept themselves less available and more mysterious by staying off social networks.

"Why on God's green earth would you be in Twitter?" he asked.
