Ella Henderson is riding high after topping the album chart with her debut release this weekend.

But the singer won’t be getting carried away with her celebrations, revealing her most extravagant purchase so far is a new sofa for her London flat.

The 18-year-old former X Factor contestant admitted she was “overwhelmed” after Chapter One reached number one in the charts yesterday.

She said: “It’s one thing after another at the moment. The album’s gone to number one — it’s ridiculous.

“I’m just trying to take it all in and just enjoy every second of it.”

The number one was “very unexpected”, she said, adding: “I just rang all my family and we all screamed down the phone at each other. It’s something I’ve worked on over the last two years. To finally have it out there, sharing it with the world, feels amazing.”

But she said that apart from the new sofa, she hadn’t celebrated her growing success with new purchases: “I’ve been working so hard I haven’t had time to go shopping.”

The singer came sixth in the 2012 series of The X Factor and went on to land a record deal with Simon Cowell’s Syco label.

The teenager surprised many with the maturity of her songwriting. She said: “I think a lot of people were expecting me to come back with a ballad or something. I think I just wanted to create my own sound and not go into someone else’s territory.

“It does have a dark side. I always have this dark twist on everything.”
