Jay Z has suffered another blow to his music streaming service, Tidal, as Chief Executive Peter Tonstad has quit just three months in.

After a rocky launch followed by a fan backlash, the Spotify competitor faces yet more problems as their latest CEO steps down.

A spokesman for Tidal has confirmed that Tonstad is "is no longer with the company" and they "will be transitioning to a permanent CEO as part of our strategic plan to create a leading platform".

Tonsad has not given any hint as to why he had decided to step down from the role, simply confirmed that it was his decision to leave.

On Wednesday he told a Norwegian newspaper: "The only thing I can confirm is that I have resigned."

Rapper Jay Z, who acquired the company for £56 million just a few months ago, recently spoke out to justify claims that the business was flailing and that it was a platform to make rich artists richer.

Using the hashtag #TidalFacts, the 99 Problems star took to Twitter to reassure fans that his new venture is "doing just fine" a few weeks ago.

He posted: "Tidal is doing just fine. We have over 770,000 subs. We have been in business less than one month. #TidalFacts."

He continued: "The iTunes Store wasn't built in a day. It took Spotify 9 years to be successful…

"Indie artists who want to work directly w/ us keep 100% of their music. If you don't want the CEOs all in the videos haa #tidalfacts."
