Jennifer Lawrence was saved by security guards from a mob of fans waiting to greet her after she made an appearance on The Late Show With David Letterman in New York City on Wednesday night.

The 24-year-old actress – wearing a black pencil dress and blazer – was grabbed by a security guard as the barrier holding back fans looked set to buckle from the crowds.

The Oscar winning actress – who has stumbled on more than one occasion during public appearances – held onto her bodyguards as they escorted her away.

Lawrence was on the show to talk about new film The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part One. Clearly not happy with the show’s set up, the American Hustle actress jokingly swapped roles with Letterman and took to his chair to introduce a clip from the film.

The star also told Letterman to not retire, got sidetracked talking about bowling and opened up about turning crazy when she took time off: "I took some time off. I lost my mind. It was awful," she said. "I don't even know how crazy I went."

Earlier in the day Lawrence was pictured working retro chic in a figure hugging red mini dress and vintage inspired sunglasses as she arrived at the studios.
