JK Rowling has apologised for killing Professor Severus Snape in the Harry Potter franchise.

The Slytherin headmaster was killed off in the final book by Lord Voldermort's snake at the Battle of Hogwarts.

Rowling issued the apology on the anniversary of the fictional battle which took place on May 2 and claimed the lives of a handful of characters.

She tweeted: “OK, here it is. Please don't start flame wars over it, but this year I'd like to apologise for killing (whispers)... Snape. *runs for cover*.”

Her apology divided fans of the beloved franchise, with some excusing her for his death while others were outraged that she would defend Snape after he spent years as Potter’s nemesis.

Others suggested she apologise for killing other characters including Lily Evans Potter and Hedwig.

Snape was played by the late Alan Rickman in the film adaptations. He died in January 2016, aged 69.

Snape was on Voldermort's side before his love for Potter's mother Lily made him switch allegiance to Professor Dumbledore. He became a spy for the Hogwarts headmaster in a bid to to protect Harry and defeat Voldemort.

Rowling marked last year’s anniversary by apologising for the death of Remus Lupin, and in 2015 she apologised for killing off Ron Weasley’s brother Fred.
