When you’re back-brushing your hair, squirting on fake blood and putting the finishing touches to your Halloween costume, you don’t expect to come face-to-face with the creature that inspired your outfit.

So spare a thought for diners at Mr Chow Tribeca in New York City, who kitted themselves out in Tom Cruise costumes and “Free Katie” and “Save Suri” t-shirts – only to come face to face with the real Katie Holmes and her daughter.

The comedy t-shirts were references to a campaign that was started when Katie was still married to Scientologist Cruise, urging her to leave the actor whom she divorced in July.

The revellers – one of whom was dressed as “young Tom” from the film Top Gun – tried to cover up their costumes.

A source told the New York Post newspaper that they managed to stop six-year-old Suri from seeing the slogans, but “exchanged awkward glances” with 33-year-old Holmes as she got a full view of the horror before her.

It was recently claimed Katie is getting ready to date again following her separation from Tom, 50 – though it is unlikely that any of these Halloween slogans will prove to be a great chat-up line for this costumed crew.
