The remnants of the smashed bass guitar from Nirvana’s Smells Like Teen Spirit video, Indiana Jones’s whip and Bob Dylan’s high school yearbook are to be sold at an entertainment memorabilia auction at Christie’s next month.
The Zen-On bass guitar, which Krist Novoselic bought from a pawn shop knowing he would bash it to pieces, is expected to go for up to £25,000.
The guitar pieces were saved by a teenage extra in the 1991 film after it was trashed by late frontman Kurt Cobain in front of an audience of black-clad cheerleaders.
Indiana Jones’s whip, along with the Holy Grain from the Last Crusade film, could fetch up to £15,000 and £3,500 respectively.
Dylan’s yearbook, expected to go for up to £6,000, dates to 1958 and features a photograph of 17-year-old Robert Zimmerman – Dylan’s real name – with the handwritten message: "Dear Jerry, Well the year's almost all over now huh. Remember the 'sessions' down at Collier. Keep practicing the guitar and maybe someday you'll be great! A friend, Bob Zimmerman."
The sale also includes a sleeveless white velour jumpsuit made for Sir Mick Jagger by famed designer Ossie Clark for the Rolling Stones' US tour in 1972.
The flashy outfit, decorated with silver metal details and valued between £8,000 and £12,000, was worn by the singer at New York's Madison Square Garden on his 29th birthday.
