The Son's Room

Momentum Pictures, 15, £19.99/£15.99

Nanni Moretti has made a career out of narcissism: from the obvious egotism of Dear Diary, his first international success, he has written, directed and starred in films all about - him.

This tale of bereavement is a departure in that it has a solid fictional framework: Moretti is a discontented therapist whose life crumbles when his son dies in a diving accident. As with Todd Field's In The Bedroom, we meet the son and so can grieve along with the father, but Moretti is incapable of the balanced view: wife and daughter recede into the background as the film is swamped by Moretti's character's all-absorbing misery.
