Madonna threw herself onto the floor as she paid tribute to David Bowie on stage.

The singer, 54, was performing at the Toyota Center in Houston, Texas as part of her Rebel Heart tour when she dedicated a song to the late musician.

The Queen of Pop took to the stage to cover Bowie’s 1974 hit, Rebel Rebel.

As she sang, a montage of Bowie images flashed up on the screen behind her.

After finishing the song she fell to the floor with her head in her hands.

Following the gig, the Like A Virgin singer posted several tweets about Bowie.

Alongside an image of herself lying on the floor she posted: “Paying Tribute to My Favorite Rebel! In Houston‼ Thank you!..........David Bowie.”

In another she quoted Bowie lyrics, writing: “Rebel Rebel You tore your dress......... Rebel Rebel how could they know??”

Bowie died on January 10 following a secret 18 month battle with cancer.

Madonna was among the thousands of fans who paid tribute, including Kanye West, Brian May and prime minister David Cameron.

Bowie will be honoured with a tribute at the BRIT Awards on Feburary 24 and a memorial concert at New York's Carnegie Hall.
