Niall Horan and Louis Tomlinson have spoken out to confirm One Direction’s extended hiatus but insist that it’s not forever.

The two popstars are the first of the band to speak out in the wake of Sunday’s news, reassuring fans on Twitter.

On Monday night, Horan, 21, wrote: “Ok so Lots of rumours going round. We are not splitting up, but we will be taking a well earned break at some point next year (sic).”

He added: “Don't worry though, we still have lots we want to achieve ! Can't wait for you to hear all the new music we have for you and to perform.

“Some new songs as the tor continues! Love you all xx. *tour I should say.”

Reiterating the words of his band mate, father-to-be Tomlinson took to his Twitter account to write:

“Your support is truly indescribable! It's just a break :) we're not going anywhere !!”

He quickly added: “Promise.”

Fans were left distraught on Monday morning as rumours emerged that One Direction would be taking an extended break following the end of their tour.

A source told The Sun’s Dan Wootton: “The guys have been together for five years, which is an incredible run for any boyband.

"They fully deserve to have at least a year to work on their own projects. There is absolutely no bad blood between them and they are all 100 per cent behind the decision.”

The insider added: "It is definitely not a split and they fully intend to get back together at some time in the future."
