Reese Witherspoon has confirmed that production on Legally Blonde 3 will be going ahead after days of rumours.

The American actress is set to reprise her role as Elle Woods in a third instalment of the cult comedy, set to be released 15 years after the last one.

Witherspoon took to Twitter to confirm the news with a simple video.

The 42-year-old shared a GIF of her character’s signature pink sequin bikini as she floated on a pool in a lilo.

She tweeted: “It’s true... #LegallyBlonde3.”

The tweet was met with a wave of excitement from fans on social media.

One fan wrote: “elle woods is gonna be back to keep showing what power means HER MIND.”

Another commented: “My 82 year old mom will be so excited! She LOVES the Legally Blonde movies!” [sic]

A third wrote: “This is the best news I've heard all year!”

News first sparked earlier this week after multiple sources claimed that the popular film franchise would make a comeback 15 years after the second film was released, which ended with Elle aspiring to work at the White House.

According to both The Hollywood Reporter and Deadline, the actress would produce the film through her Hello Sunshine banner.

The brand, founded by Witherspoon, describes their company as “anchored in storytelling, creating and discovering content that celebrates women and puts them at the centre of the story”.

The publications also report that original writers Kirsten Smith and Karen McCullah are set to return to their roles while Mark Platt and Adam Siegel would produce, alongside the lead star.
