Singer Shaun Ryder has claimed that he stumbled across a UFO in his garden.

Ryder, 52, opened up about the unusual experience during an appearance on This Morning with Amanda Holden and Phillip Schofield.

Describing the moment he came face-to-face with the other worldly object he said: “We were filming in South America at the time. I remember I got back to my house at about 5am and I saw a craft outside my house.

“It was huge! Around 20ft by 10ft. It looked plastic - like a toy. I didn't believe it at first. I thought our production team were playing a trick on me. But nobody else saw it.

“This thing made a cloud around it then went really slow across the field. No sound.”

Ryder – who is now sober following a struggle with drugs – made sure to assure viewers that he was sober when the incident occurred, saying: “Maybe I was hallucinating but I am not making it up. No magic mushrooms or anything.”

The former Happy Monday’s singer is a keen alien enthusiast having starred on his own show, Shaun Ryder on UFO’s.

When asked how he felt about people dismissing extra-terrestrial sightings he said: “We're not alone in this universe. It's annoying when you have people like pilots and military officials who usually make great witnesses, but if they tell you they've seen a UFO, nobody believes them.”

The singer was soon trending on Twitter thanks to his appearance on the morning chat show, but some fans feared that he had died.

One user tweeted: “To save anyone else a few seconds scrolling, Shaun Ryder is not trending because he's dead but because he believes in aliens or something.”

Others were unconvinced by the story and labelled his past drug use as the cause behind his belief that he has seen a UFO.

Another user went as far as to say the singer was not even aware of what planet he was on in 1988 so could not be a reliable witness for UFO spotting.
