Mark Hamill turned to the dark side as he transformed into a Stormtrooper to prank fans in Hollywood.

Hamill - who will reprise his role as Luke Skywalker in Star Wars: Force Awakens - donned the attire to help promote Omaze's Star Wars: Force for Change fundraising campaign which works to raise money for charities including UNICEF.

It was the first time he has put on the costume since using it as a disguise to rescue Princess Leia from the Death Star's cell block AA-23 in the 1977 film.

After failing to open the blast doors with the force, Hamill made his way along Hollywood Boulevard to mingle with the unsuspecting public.

He danced with some young fans, attempted to catch a bus to Alderaan and spoke to a woman who professed her love for "Mark Hamilton".

The actor also confused Iron Man for C3-PO, took on a lightsaber weilding jedi and was reunited with Chewbacca.

Hamill also came face-to-face with his father Darth Vader - and managed to convince the Dark Lord to make a charitable donation.

"Just donate $10 - you dont wanna be a bad guy do you?" Hamill asked.

Vader replied: "Okay that sounds like a very worthy cause."

Hamil's prank comes a week after Han Solo actor Harrison Ford invaded a string of Skype conversations - much to the delight of fans.

The Star Wars: Force for Change campaign is offering fans a once in a lifetime chance to meet the cast of the seventh film at the London or Los Angeles premieres.

The prize also includes a walk down the red carpet and a ticket to the after party.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens is set for UK cinema release on December 17.
