Downton Abbey has played host to Lords and Ladies as well as Hollywood actor George Clooney, but today the cast welcomed the arrival of The Duchess of Cambridge.

Kate was greeted outside Ealing Studios by the writer and creator of the award-winning period drama, Lord Julian Fellowes. Actress Phyllis Logan, who plays housekeeper Mrs Hughes, Robert James Collier, who stars as butler Thomas, and four-year-old twin brothers Oliver and Zac Barker who play Lady Mary Crawley’s son George were also out to welcome the royal visitor.

Kate was taken below stairs to the servants quarters to visit Kevin Doyle who plays footman Joseph Molesley, and Raquel Cassidy who stars as Cora Crawley's lady's maid Phyllis Baxter in the boot room.

Sophie McShera and Lesley Nicol, who play cooks Daisy and Mrs Patmore, presented the Duchess with a cake before she headed upstairs to visit Michelle Dockery (Lady Mary Crawley) and Joanne Froggatt (Anna Bates).

The official Twitter account for Kensington Palace was keeping fans up-to-date with the Duchess’ visit and tweeted pictures of her on a tour of the construction workshop and the prop store.

The Duchess – who is pregnant with her second child – was then given the chance to watch an episode of series six being filmed via a monitor in the video village.

Kate's visit comes a week after the Countess of Wessex took Mexico's First Lady Angelica Rivera to visit the set of the BAFTA winning drama.
