Too much too young but we’ve learned to cope with fame, say original Sugababes

Ex-Sugababe Mutya Buena has said she would stop her own child going into showbusiness — as she relaunches her career with her former bandmates.

The singer declared she would “never” allow daughter Tahlia, eight, to follow her. In tomorrow’s Evening Standard magazine, Buena, 28, advised anyone entering the music industry: “Take your time and remember talent never dies.”

The Sugababes were fractious from their launch as a trio of 13-year-olds in 1998. Siobhán Donaghy left after three years, with Buena following in 2005. Keisha Buchanan lasted until 2009. The band continued, with new members stepping in. But to the surprise of many, the originals reunited last year as Mutya Keisha Siobhán.

Donaghy, 29, told how, looking back, the adult world “maybe forgot we were young and our happiness was important”. Buchanan, 28, said they had now built “a fresh adult relationship”.

To overcome tensions they met in the Lanesborough hotel. Donaghy said: “The last time we’d seen each other we’d been teenagers in tracksuit bottoms having KFC and here we were having this fabulous dinner and cocktails. We were quite shocked to find we got on really well.”
