David was presented the award by Sir Elton John and David Furnish, and told the audience that he was "extremely honoured".

"We live in a world where children are still dying of preventable diseases, or being subjected to abuse and violence," said the former footballer.

"I have four children of my own and I will not stop supporting UNICEF until I know that all children are safe, healthy and have a bright future ahead of them."

The ball, which marked the launch of Louis Vuitton for UNICEF, saw Mariah Carey perform hits including Always Be My Baby, We Belong Together and Hero.

Nicole Kidman, Selena Gomez, Heidi Klum, Michelle Rodriguez and Miranda Kerr were also in attendance.
