Victoria Wood has been described as “magnificent” and a “national treasure” by those paying tribute following the news of her death.

Wood died, aged 62, after a “short but brave” battle with cancer, her publicist confirmed on Wednesday.

Fans of the award-winning comedian took to Twitter to pay tribute including Jennifer Saunders, Ricky Gervais, James Corden and her long-time friend, Julie Walters.

In a statement, Walters - who starred alongside the late comedian in Wood and Walters - said: "Too heart sore to comment. The loss of her is incalculable."

Saunders described Wood as an “inspiration” while Corden deemed her “brilliantly talented”.

"Can’t believe Vic has gone," Saunders posted. "She was truly an inspiration and had so much left to give and we won't see it. She was so funny."

Derren Brown wrote: "No! Not Victoria Wood. What on earth is going on? A shy genius by all accounts. End of an era."

Tony Hall, the BBC's director general described her as "a woman with a stunning array of talents - a comedian, singer, songwriter, actress and director". He said: People identified with her warmth and great charm.

"She brought people from all walks of life together and made them laugh and cry. She will be greatly missed and our thoughts are with her friends and family."

Wood died at her home surrounded by family and friends. The news was confirmed by her publicisit in a statement which read: “Victoria Wood has sadly passed away, after a short but brave battle with cancer.

"The multi BAFTA award-winning writer, director, actor and comedian died peacefully at her North London home with family this morning. She was 62.

"The family ask for privacy at this very sad time."

Wood is survived by her daughter Grace and son Henry.
