Wes Nelson left Love Island fans gobsmacked after dropping a series of bombshells on Capital Breakfast, including how producers encourage islanders to wear as few clothes as possible.

Nelson, 22, said it isn’t a “coincidence” that the contestants spend the summer in swimwear no matter the time of day.

“I used to try and go out in a hoodie and heavily clothed in the morning because sometimes it is a bit chilly, but you’d have to take that off,” he told host Roman Kemp.

“We’d like to be in the shade a bit of the day because it’s roasting hot, so when you’re in the shade it’s actually quite cold. Me and Josh [Denzel] used to run out all the time in hoodies and they’d be like ‘take it off’.”

Nelson also revealed that all the phones show different times and that a producer sits with them while they eat their main meals to ensure no one is having “saucy chats” off camera.

“You are briefed when you go in,” he said. “You can’t talk about previous islanders or any scenarios that have ever happened before on previous series. You can’t mention anything that’s going on in the outside.”

He added: “Obviously you can’t fight or be aggressive towards islanders or producers.”

Nelson, who finished fourth last year with then-girlfriend Megan Barton Hanson, also revealed he would often wake up to a “geezer” standing over him in the middle of the night as producers crept in to change their microphones.

“People run round in the night and you’ll hear them changing the mic while you’re asleep and they’ll be next to you and you’ll make really awkward eye contact then go back to sleep again,” he said. “It’s odd. You wake up and there’s some geezer stood over your bed.”

The revelations come days after 2017 winner Kem Cetinay shocked Holly Willoughby after revealing the islanders are treated to a day off on Saturday’s to “chill out on the beach”, free from the cameras.

He said the islanders are banned from getting romantically involved with one another and are prevented from discussing the show.

“You’ve got to talk about home life,” he said on This Morning. “You’re being watched by an eagle hawk, by the producers, because they don’t want you to talk about what’s going on.”

Love Island is on ITV2, tonight at 9pm. Tune into Capital Breakfast with Roman Kemp, week days from 6am – 10am across the UK.
