Coldplay are known for their clean-cut image and teetotal singer Chris Martin, but he admits the four-strong band has struggled with alcohol and drug issues.

Martin, 34, said: "Success and fame, alcohol and drugs. We've been through all of those things.

"They're just pitfalls, and that comes from a lot of travelling and a lot of down time. " He told Absolute Radio breakfast show that the band - who have just released fifth album Mylo Xyloto - rely on each other to get through loneliness on tour, adding: "We split our songwriting credits and everything we get, we split it equally. It means when one of us is having a hard time or a problem, then we all have the best interests of each other at heart."

He said the best thing about his marriage to actress Gwyneth Paltrow, with whom he has two children, is "coming home to an Oscar winner" adding: "It's not all bad. As you get older, you have kids, but there is also a lot more sadness.

So maybe the contrast makes the happy times more so.

"Our music is reflecting that."
