Elton John has been branded a sinner for wanting to adopt a Ukrainian child.

The country's Orthodox Church, which is against same-sex marriages, said it would oppose all attempts to help the singer, 62, and his partner David Furnish, 46, adopt 14-month-old Lev.

Donetsk Diocese's Father Georgy Gulyaev said of gay marriages: "It is a sin, it is against nature, and it represents the dead end of human development."

Ukraine's family minister Yuriy Pavlenko said the couple had not applied to adopt, but "if there were such a request... we would have to refuse".
