Spooks will come back with a bang when star Rupert Penry-Jones in killed off in series 7

Spooks star Rupert Penry-Jones is leaving the popular BBC1 show after five years playing spy Adam Carter.

The 37-year-old actor, who is married to Ballykissangel star Dervla Kirwan, will be written out in an explosive plot to feature early in the seventh series.

A popular character of the long-running drama, Penry-Jones who stars alongside Keeley Hawes and Anna Chancellor as the ruthless MI6 devotee.

His character will be killed off when the programme returns to the small-screen next year.

How writers have decided to end the character's run remains unclear.

But Penry-Jones's growing popularity means he will not be off our screens for long.

Prior to taking on the Spooks role, the 37-year-old had parts in TV dramas Kavanagh QC and Jane Eyre.

He has also started to make a mark in Hollywood, starring alongside Cate Blanchett in 2001 film Charlotte Gray.

Like the Spice Girls, the actor recently starred with Martine McCutcheon in a Tesco advertisement.

The sixth series of Spooks ends on Tuesday December 18.
