Rod Stewart carried on with his concert in Manchester despite a leg injury

The 62-year-old star slipped on a step as he made his entrance at the City of Manchester Stadium.

He carried on with the show but was treated by a doctor today.

The accident meant newlywed Stewart was unable to attend the 02 Silver Clef Awards in London, where he was due to receive the Icon award.

Instead TV chef Gordon Ramsay, who was supposed to present the honour, read out a speech from the singer.

Former gravedigger Stewart said: "It's a real honour to be the first recipient of this award and I would like to dedicate it to the memory of Long John Baldry because without him I would still be digging graves."

And he joked: "Of course an undeniable bonus is getting something that Elton John ain't got."

The Silver Clef lunch was held in aid of music charity Nordoff-Robbins Music Therapy.

Stewart was treated by his doctor in London this morning.

His spokeswoman said: "Rod Stewart was unable to attend the Nordoff-Robbins Silver Clef lunch to receive his Icon award after cutting his leg on a wet, slippery metal step while making his entrance on stage last night at the City of Manchester Stadium.

"He performed the entire show in the rain, refusing any medical treatment, and today received 10 stitches to the wound.

"Happily his doctor has confirmed he will be able to perform tomorrow's show at Twickenham Stadium and the 'Concert for Diana' on Sunday."
