Jamie's pots are panned by critics

Top chef Jamie Oliver's own-brand frying pans were battered by rivals costing less than half as much in tests carried out by consumer watchdog Which? for Pancake Day.

Oliver's £44 "professional" version scored the same as one costing just £17. Another £34 Oliver-brand pan, made by Tefal, could only manage ninth place in the same table. Tefal's £15 non-branded alternative was rated fifth overall.

It suggests that having a famous name on the box may do wonders for the price tag but little for the customer.

Which? put 19 top-selling pans to the test before Shrove Tuesday tomorrow. Marks were awarded for how evenly they cooked food, how non-stick the coating proved to be and how user-friendly they were.

Oliver's 26cm professional series hard frypan earned 76 out of 100, as did the £17 John Lewis 25cm fying pan.
