Jo Whiley is to leave Radio 1 after 17 years in a shake-up of BBC stations announced today.

The former daytime DJ will move to Radio 2 to present a new show for three nights a week in the overhaul, which takes effect in April.

She said: "I've loved working at Radio 1 for the past 17 years. As well as supporting my love of music, Radio 1 have also supported and accommodated me bringing three further children into the world, something, as a woman, I will always be grateful for."

Mark Radcliffe and Stuart Maconie's evening show is being dropped from Radio 2 after four years.

The duo will switch to digital station 6 Music but Radcliffe will stay on the main station with a new weekly one-hour show. The pair will front a daily three-hour show on 6 Music, starting at 1pm, replacing Nemone Metaxas, who will move to a weekend slot.

The BBC said Radcliffe and Maconie's new show "will reflect the rich relationship that the station has with Manchester and music
from the North".

Whiley, 45, will host a 90-minute show from Monday to Wednesday for Radio 2 from April 4.

Bob Shennan, controller of Radio 2 and 6 Music, said: "Jo's at the top of her game and is a first-rate broadcaster with a great knowledge of music. I'm looking forward to her bringing her own brand of presenting to the Radio 2 evening schedule."
