Kate buys $5m NY home

Kate Winslet and husband Sam Mendes have bought a $5 million (£2.65 million) loft apartment in the Chelsea district of New York.

The property, in a red-brick building resembling the set of TV sitcom Friends, boasts three bedrooms and a roof garden. It is near the £1.5-million home the couple rented over Christmas 2003, while Winslet filmed Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind.

During that time Winslet, 29, whose performance in the film has earned her an Oscar nomination, gave birth to their son Joe.

An insider said: "Kate fell in love with New York's Chelsea. That time and place will always be special to her."
