Newsreader Katie Derham is leaving ITV to join the BBC, it has been confirmed.

She is leaving to pursue her passion for music, described as "one of her greatest loves".

Moving stations: Katie Derham is swapping TV channels

A BBC spokesman said Derham was going to be the face of BBC 2's Proms coverage this summer and would also be presenting music programmes, including on the Proms, on Radio 3.

The move comes days after Adrian Chiles announced he was quitting the BBC for ITV, where he will present GMTV.

Derham, 39, presents ITV's lunchtime news bulletin and London Tonight.

She has hosted the Classical Brits a number of times.

And ITN spokesman said: "We can confirm that Katie Derham will be leaving ITN to join the BBC in a non-news role.

"We wish her all the best and will announce in due course our presenting plans for ITV Network News and London Tonight, where we already have a very strong roster of experienced female presenters."

David Mannion, editor-in-chief at ITV News, said: "Katie is an exceptional talent and we shall miss her a great deal.

"Music is, however, one of her greatest loves and this opportunity was always going to be very difficult for her to resist.

"As her employer I must thank her for a huge contribution to ITV Network News and to London Tonight.

"She is a consummate professional and a brilliant journalist. As her friend for many years, I simply want to wish her well in this very exciting new career path."

Derham started her career at the BBC where she was a researcher on Radio 4's Moneybox.

She became consumer affairs correspondent for BBC television in 1996 and was also a reporter for Film '96 and Film '97.

At ITN the Cambridge graduate anchored coverage of elections, royal weddings and the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.
