Lily Allen has claimed “men should be men”, saying she is put off by members of the opposite sex who spend too long in front of the mirror or wear aftershave.

The singer, who married builder and decorator Sam Cooper in 2011, said vain men give her the “shivers”.

She is the guest editor of this week’s ShortList magazine, called “How To Be A Man, by Women”.

It features advice from Allen and other stars including actress Vicky McClure. They are photographed wearing men’s clothing for the special issue.

Allen, 28, has two children with Cooper, Ethel, two, and one-year-old Marnie.

She said: “I like that when my husband gets up in the morning he spends about 12 seconds looking in the mirror then leaves.

“I’m not into men who are vain or even wearing aftershave. It gives me shivers. Men should be men. Go out, earn some money, come back and look after my children.”

Allen also claimed women were to blame for their body issues. “I don’t think men are the enemy, I think women are the enemy,” she said.

“I know that when I’m sitting in a restaurant and a really beautiful woman walks in, who’s skinny, I instinctively think, ‘Oh she’s really skinny and beautiful and I’m really fat and ugly.’ Every man I speak to always says they find that kind of woman gross, and they prefer a bit more meat on their ladies.

“So it’s more of a competitive thing. It’s weird. It’s just really unhealthy and we’re our own worst enemy. We should stop being so horrible to each other.”

McClure, 30, who is starring in BBC2 drama Line Of Duty, had some different advice about male grooming. “I like my man to look smart,” she said.

“I’m more than happy for him to slob in his tracksuit all weekend because I’ll be doing the same, but it’s always a nice thing to see a bloke in a suit.”

She also admitted stealing clothes from her boyfriend, actor Jonny Owen. “He’s got a T-shirt with Kes on the front and the minute I saw it I thought, ‘I’m having that’.

“It’s just a baggy top, but Kes is one of my favourite films.”

Lily Allen and Vicky McClure appear in this week’s issue of ShortList, out tomorrow.
