Tours of London are ten-a-penny but few have made it on to the school curriculum, such as this Jack The Ripper jaunt. We take a look at some of the other mysterious goings on in the capital...

1. St Bartholomew's Hospital, Smithfield
A nurse known as Grey Lady gave a fatal overdose to a patient. Grief-stricken, she committed suicide and is said to haunt the hospital.

2. Anchor Tavern, Southwark
Smugglers in the 18th century tried to kidnap a fellow drinking at the bar. His dog attacked them but his tail was caught in the door and cut off. Yelping, he ran off, never to be seen again. Now, late at night, a sorry dog can be seen searching the pub for his tail.

3. Church Row, Hampstead
A servant killed a child, dismembered the body and, at the first sign of daylight, left the house hiding the remains in a carpet bag. She has since been spotted in the early mornings, shuffling hastily towards the old church and carrying the carpet bag.

4. Lowndes Square, Knightsbridge.
An old lady spotted sitting at the kerb pulling faces is said to be the ghost of a woman who suffered a stroke and was left outside by her daughter, who hoped someone would take her in.
