Lord Alan Sugar has compared former Apprentice contestant Katie Hopkins to Piers Morgan.

The business mogul, who is back next week with the 12th season of the reality show, thinks that the former boardroom wannabe isn’t too different to the Good Morning Britain presenter.

Speaking at the launch of the new show, Lord Sugar discussed the rise of the controversial star.

“You get a few people who are picked up by the media because of their outlandish comments and things like that and they go and pursue a separate career,” he said.

“Lots of them have tried – Katie Hopkins has found herself a special niche in the market. She’s like Piers Morgan on steroids.”

“Of course the media lap it up and the more controversial she wants to be, the more they lap it up,” he added.

Lord Sugar also took a swipe at his one-time American Apprentice counterpart Donald Trump following the first of the Presidential debates.

“As many people have said, it's quite a frightening thought that he might be the most powerful man in the world shortly,” he said.

Speaking about the longevity of The Apprentice, he said: “There are winners and losers in the process.

“There are real winners and then there are the past people who have won and gone into business and now employ lots of people.

“That’s what I do this for, that’s what we do this for, that’s what the BBC does this for.”

The Apprentice airs at 9pm on BBC One on October 6.
