Dance quartet Rudimental have achieved the seemingly impossible after writing a new song, recording it and performing it live in less than 24 hours.

The Hackney group collaborated with singer Bipolar Sunshine, starting at 9am yesterday and playing the track at a gig in Waterloo at 11pm .

The band are riding high after scoring two No 1 singles in 12 months, with their debut album, Home, topping the charts in May. They were asked to attempt the challenge as part of the Bacardi Beginnings music mentoring programme, and made the funky disco creation at a studio in Battersea. Rudimental’s DJ Locksmith, real name Leon Rolle, said: “We had to write it, produce it, mix it down and perform it in under 24 hours — that’s what you call working under pressure. We had a couple of ideas from Bipolar and just rehearsed them and by about 12pm we were ready to start recording things down.

“We’re all into different genres, so when we’re together something crazy happens. And that’s exactly what happened today. A lot of people probably think it’s going to be a drum and bass track coming out, but it’s not — it’s sort of a disco/house/jazz mix-up.”

He said the band are still coming to terms with their huge success. “Even to this day, we still don’t quite believe it. I still fear that when we get on stage, only 20 people are going to turn up.”
