Adams does it his way

12 April 2012

New Portsmouth manager Tony Adams has told his players he will let them go if they want to join Harry Redknapp at Tottenham - or any other rival boss.

But he is asking them to continue the Pompey fairytale just as if nothing had happened.

"If they want to go, then I'll let them go. I only want players who want to play for Portsmouth - absolutely," said Adams.

"It's my experience that if you depend on players who are not happy at the club and don't want to play for it, then it's no good to you in the long run," he added.

Pompey have been accused of letting Redknapp leave for a £5million compensation package to help ease massive debts that are allegedly crippling the south coast club following Franco-Russian owner Sacha Gaydamak's two-year, £60million spending spree.

Gaydamak's next trick, according to the cynics, is to hold a fire-sale of top players in the January transfer window - or even sell the club.

Speculation is Adams has been promoted - with a two-and-a-half-year contract - on a fraction of Redknapp's reported £3million-a-year wages, but the former Gunner has fired a warning.

He said: "I'll just take another job - if they do that to me it would cut my throat. I wouldn't have a chance.

"But I think the chairman - and the owner - have answered all those financial questions. I've got a very good squad here and nobody has come to me and talked about going anywhere."
