Alex Bogdanovic's Wimbledon fight

13 April 2012

Alex Bogdanovic, who has failed to win at Wimbledon in eight attempts as a wild card, will have to produce something special to reach next week's Grand Slam.

For although the British No2 defeated Brazil's Ricardo Hocevar 63, 7-6 in his opening qualifier at Roehampton he now plays former Queen's finalist Nicolas Mahut.

Victory today would put Bogdanovic one win away from the main draw but he faces a tricky test against a player who was 40th in the rankings two years ago.

Although Frenchman Mahut is now 149th - 12 places above Bogadnovic - he showed his abilities on grass at Queen's last week by beating world No80 Yen-Hsun Lu before losing in three sets to bighitting Marin Cilic.

Dan Evans fought back to beat American Tim Smyczek 4-6, 6-1, 1210 while another British winner was Josh Goodall, who saw off Albert Ramos-Vinolas, the 21st seed from Spain, 6-3, 64.

Evans has the chance for revenge today when he takes on Ricardas Berankis, having lost to the Lithuanian in the Davis Cup in March. Goodall meets Russian Evgeny Kirillov.
