Another great clay day for Henman

13 April 2012

Tim Henman's excellent clay court form continued today when he marched into the third round of the Monte Carlo Masters with a 6-4 6-2 victory over Argentine Gaston Gaudio.

The eighth seeded Briton looked right at home on his least favourite surface as he dominated the clay court specialist from the start.

A break for 3-1 in the first set was all he needed to secure the opener and Henman closed it out with the minimum of fuss.

Henman grew in confidence on a sunny Court des Princes and used his all-court game to great effect to beat the world number 26 in just 85 minutes.

The result comes 24 hours after Henman beat France's Fabrice Santoro and illustrates just how much the Briton has improved on slow, red clay.

Gaudio is a major force on this surface. He reached the final in Vina del Mar and the semifinals in Buenos Aires in February.

With victories over Yevgeny Kafelnikov and Juan Carlos Ferrero in last month's Ericsson Open Masters on the hard courts of Miami, his big match temperament cannot be doubted either, but he was no match for Henman in the principality.
