Argentina through to Davis Cup final

12 April 2012

Argentina will contest a Davis Cup final for the first time in 25 years after David Nalbandian and Agustin Calleri produced a doubles masterclass to crush Australia's Wayne Arthurs and Paul Hanley in straight sets.

The Argentinian pair, widely regarded as underdogs ahead of the World Group semi-final rubber with the Australian doubles specialists, broke once in each set to wrap up a 6-4 6-4 7-5 victory in two hours and 26 minutes.

Argentina - who seized a 3-0 lead in their match - will now face either the USA or Russia in their first final appearance since losing to the United States in 1981.

Having broken the Australia serve early in the first set, the Argentinians were rarely troubled by the haphazard returning of their opponents and soon took the opening set.

Arthurs and Hanley, who managed just two break points in the whole match, did not fare much better in the second and, once they lost a break midway through the set, again surrendered without a fight.

It took 11 games for the Argentinians to force a decisive break in the third, but serving at 6-5 Nalbandian did not look back as he thundered down a 202kmph delivery to book his country's place in November's final.
