Ashes captaincy for debate - Graveney

14 April 2012

England chairman of selectors David Graveney has admitted the captaincy for this winter's Ashes tour needs to be discussed.

Andrew Flintoff was initially named as Michael Vaughan's replacement as skipper for this summer's Pakistan series and the forthcoming Australia trip but the all-rounder is now out injured.

Andrew Strauss has led England to victory over Pakistan in his absence and with Flintoff's fitness still likely to be an issue as the Ashes approaches, there have been suggestions he should continue.

Coach Duncan Fletcher admits the issue needs to be thought about and Graveney says it will, although he hinted Flintoff may still be the preferred choice.

Graveney told Sky Sports News: "Duncan, quite rightly, has been quoted in the press - we need to talk about it. That's the statement that's been made and that's the line.

"Both have done very well and they both have aspirations to lead in Australia.

"We, as selectors, need to talk to the individuals concerned but from the process adopted in the summer you can probably get a fair indication of how we were thinking."
