Jason Kenny's bid to land England's second gold medal in the space of an hour at the velodrome fell just short as he was edged into silver by New Zealand's Sam Webster in the men's sprint.

The three-time Olympic champion, who came from behind to beat Australia's Peter Lewis in the semi-finals, could not repeat the feat as Webster took the deciding race on the line.

The Bolton racer, who could only manage fifth place at the World Championships earlier this year, struggled in qualifying on Thursday, only going through in 11th place.

Kenny lost the opening race of the final before roaring back to force a decider, but did not have the legs to get past his rival on the line in the decider.
