Olympic and World long jump champion Greg Rutherford will head up a 23-strong British team for the World Indoor Championships in Portland later this month.

Rutherford had been forced out of last month’s Glasgow Indoor Grand Prix with an injury niggle and his training has since been curtailed by illness but confirmed he will bid to add World Indoor gold to his list of global titles.

Following defending 60 metre champion Richard Kilty’s decision not to defend his world title, the second sprint berth alongside British champion James Dasaolu goes to Andrew Robertson, who was runner-up at the trials at the weekend.

The British team is already without big names such as Jessica Ennis-Hill (Achilles injury) and Mo Farah, who is instead focusing on the World Half-Marathon Championships at the end of the month.

And former 1500m world silver medallist Hannah England added to the list of absentees by opting not to take up her spot despite winning the trials. Fellow trial winners Nigel Levine (400m) and Andrew Pozzi (60m hurdles) have also chosen to forego Portland.

But there are still medal possibilities with world No.2 high jumper Chris Baker and world long jump silver medallist Shana Proctor, who is included with British rival Lorraine Ugen.

The British team have also taken up an invitational spot for teenager Morgan Lake to compete in the pentathlon.

Performance director Neil Black said: “This is a team that has been selected on the basis that every athlete can realistically make their final but also with an eye on their individual development looking towards the Olympics this year and the London 2017 World Championships.

“There have been some excellent performances during the indoor season and we are confident that many of those selected will be challenging for medals.

“It is important to remember that British Athletics’ focus as well as that of the individual athletes, is geared towards Rio in this Olympic year and the World Indoors is one of many stepping stones our athletes will look to use
