Barnsley kid breaks age record

13 April 2012

Reuben Noble-Lazarus last night became the youngest player to play in a Football League game when he went on as an 84th-minute substitute at Ipswich.

The striker, aged 15 years and 45 days, made his debut as a replacement for Martin Devaney to break a record that had stood for more than three-quarters of a century.

The previous record was shared by Bradford's Albert Geldard, who was 15 years and 158 days when he made his debut in 1929, and Ken Roberts, who turned out for Wrexham in 1951.

Sadly for Noble-Lazarus, who was due back at school today, Barnsley lost 3-0.

But manager Simon Davey, said: "I gave him a start in the Under-18s when he was 12 and he scored a hat-trick for the youth team on Saturday."
